Happy Earth Day everyone!

Today is not only a day to celebrate all that the planet has to offer by getting outside but it is also a great day to give back to your community and environment. And with that in mind, this year marked the first annual Utica Greens Earth Day Garden Clean Up. Volunteers came from all over to help work in community gardens, getting them ready for the spring planting season!

We would like to thank all who participated! The day began at the site of the future One World Flower garden, where Hamilton College volunteers teamed up with the kids who run Blended Feast (a new social enterprise dedicated to helping the community gardens) to seed bomb the currently empty lot.

Then all of the students gathered at MLK Dream Park to meet up with other volunteers to go clean gardens throughout the city. With tools from the Utica Public Library (where you can now check out gardening tools the same as books- get your library card today!), supplies from the City of Utica for the Great American CleanUP, and much excitement, around 40 volunteers divided up to prepare seven gardens throughout the city for the growing season.

We'd like to give a special thanks to all the volunteers including: the kids behind Blended FEAST and Youth FEAST, students and professors from both Hamilton College and SUNY Polytechnic Institute, Master Gardeners from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County, and everyone else who turned out to help!

The Unity South, Unity North, For the Good, BUG, The Salvation Army, Kirkland, and Peace Gardens all look great and are ready for planting!
